Understanding the Unconscious Mind

Have you ever had a gut instinct about something? A hunch or an intuition that somethings going to happen? Well, that's your unconscious mind talking to you.    It's a profound concept - that deep within each of us is a powerful force, and even more profound is that we might not be making the best use of this inner intuition.

First, let's take a step back and understand the brain a bit better. Essentially, we have to parts to our brain - the conscious part and unconscious, also known as the subconscious. And these two parts have very different roles.   The unconscious mind is in charge of all of our conscious actions.   Basically, it's the boss of mind and body, it keeps blood pumping through your body, puts one foot in front of the other, tells your eyes to blink, and so forth.

Overtime the unconscious mind collects your memories, beliefs and experiences and forms them into your unique view of the world.  Think of it like putting on a pair of glasses that are unique to you and that's how you view your world. It's your filter on everything you experience and perceive.

Now let's imagine that these glasses had a big greasy thumb print on them, so when you look through your glasses what you see is fuzzy and distorted. Wipe away that greasy mark and your outlook will be different.   Essentially that's what we aim to do with hypnosis (and self hypnosis). We aim to change your unconscious view so that you perceive your outlook differently and hence experience life in a more positive way.

Taking the glasses analogy a step further,  imagine if you wore Michelle Obama’s or the Dalai Lama's glasses for a day,  both extreme examples I know but wouldn't your outlook, your interactions with people and your perception of the world be incredibly different.

We can't change our past but we can change our future.  And if we change our inherent unconscious mindset for the better (whatever that might be for you -  e.g. I'm not a size 16 person anymore, I'm a happy and confident person, work stress doesn't consume my life.)

Change your unconscious mind and you will change your behaviour and actions.
